Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most popular anime series of recent years, based on the manga by Gege Akutami. The first season, which aired from October 2020 to March 2021, introduced us to the world of jujutsu sorcerers, who fight against curses that threaten humanity. The protagonist, Yuji Itadori, is a high school student who becomes the host of Ryomen Sukuna, the most powerful and evil of all curses. He joins Tokyo Jujutsu High School, where he meets his mentor, Satoru Gojo, and his teammates, Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki.
The second season, which premiered on July 6, 2023, has been delivering more action, drama, and comedy than ever before. It consists of two arcs: the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc, which acts as a prequel and focuses on Gojo and his former friend Suguru Geto; and the Shibuya Incident arc, which takes place in the present and depicts a massive battle between sorcerers and curses in Shibuya on Halloween night.
In this blog post, we will review some of the best moments from Jujutsu Kaisen 2 so far, based on the first 12 episodes that have aired as of this writing.
Spoilers Ahead!
Gojo’s Past Revealed in Jujutsu Kaisen 2
One of the most anticipated aspects of the second season was the exploration of Gojo’s past, as he is one of the most popular and mysterious characters in the series. The Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc showed us how Gojo became the strongest sorcerer in history and how his friendship with Geto turned into a bitter rivalry.
We learned that Gojo and Geto were students at Jujutsu High, along with Shoko Ieiri and Utahime Iori. They were assigned to protect Riko Amanai, a girl who was chosen to be the next Star Plasma Vessel for Master Tengen, an immortal being who maintains the barrier between the human and curse realms. However, they were opposed by a group of sorcerers who wanted to kill Riko and prevent Tengen from merging with her.
During their mission, Gojo and Geto faced many dangers and enemies, such as Toji Fushiguro (Megumi’s father), who was hired by the opposing faction; Juzo Kumiya, a sorcerer who could manipulate blood; and Q (a.k.a. Uraume), a mysterious curse user who served Sukuna. They also encountered Yuki Tsukumo, a sorcerer who shared Geto’s ideal of creating a world where only jujutsu sorcerers exist.
Through these events, we saw how Gojo developed his signature Six Eyes and Limitless techniques, which gave him unparalleled power and perception. We also saw how Geto became disillusioned with the Jujutsu society and its rules, and how he decided to betray Gojo and join forces with Q and Sukuna. The arc culminated in a tragic showdown between Gojo and Geto at Shinjuku Station, where Gojo killed his former friend and vowed to change the jujutsu world.
Return of Itadori in Jujutsu Kaisen 2
After the shocking ending of Season 1, where Itadori seemingly died after being stabbed by Mahito’s transfigured human, many fans were wondering if he would come back to life. The answer was yes, but not without a price.
It was revealed that Itadori survived thanks to Sukuna’s intervention, who made a deal with him: he would heal his wounds in exchange for one minute of control over his body whenever he wanted. Itadori agreed, but he didn’t know that Sukuna had another condition: he would kill anyone he saw during that minute.
This led to one of the most horrifying scenes in the series, where Sukuna took over Itadori’s body during his reunion with Fushiguro and Kugisaki at Jujutsu High. He mercilessly slaughtered several students and teachers, including Yoshinobu Gakuganji (the principal of Kyoto Jujutsu High) and Masamichi Yaga (the principal of Tokyo Jujutsu High). He also fought against Gojo, who tried to stop him but was unable to break through his domain expansion.
Fortunately, Itadori managed to regain control of his body before Sukuna could kill his friends. He apologized to them for what happened, and he asked them to kill him if he ever lost control again. He also learned that he had been declared dead by the jujutsu authorities and that he had to keep his survival a secret.
Shibuya Incident in Jujutsu Kaisen 2
The main arc of the second season is the Shibuya Incident, which is the biggest and most chaotic event in the series so far. It involves a large-scale attack on Shibuya by a group of curses led by Geto (who was revealed to be alive but possessed by an unknown entity) and Mahito. Their goal is to seal Gojo inside a special prison realm and unleash Sukuna upon the world.
The attack coincides with Halloween night, when thousands of civilians are gathered in Shibuya for the festivities. The curses use this opportunity to create panic and chaos and to feed on the negative emotions of the people. They also target the jujutsu sorcerers who are stationed in Shibuya, such as Nanami, Maki, Naobito, Mai Zenin, Panda, Toge Inumaki, and Yuta Okkotsu (the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0).
Itadori, Fushiguro, and Kugisaki also join the fight, along with some of their allies from Kyoto Jujutsu High, such as Momo Nishimiya, Noritoshi Kamo, and Aoi Todo. They face off against some of the most powerful and dangerous curses in the series, such as Hanami, Dagon, Choso, and Jogo.
